Kefalonia in a nutshell
Located in the heart of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is the largest and most stunning of the Ionian Islands. It has inspired many with its beauty and has been the filming location of several movies with the most notable one being “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. Wherever you set your eyes on, you’ll see nature at its best!
Why Visit
Widely known for its gorgeous beaches, dramatic landscapes and delicious food, the island attracts and bewitches thousands every year, with most coming back for more. Turquoise bays, quaint villages, white dazzling sand, rare red stretches of stunning coastline, exciting activities and mysterious geological phenomena make up our own corner in heaven.
From Myrtos, the awarded sandy beach backed with towering cliffs, to Antisamos, Petani, Xi, Skala and Makris Gialos, every Kefalonia beach, from the tiniest cove to the large stretches of sand, will leave you in awe.
The Cosmopolitan Fiscardo
As for the villages, prepare to be charmed! Apart from the capital of the island, Argostoli, you must visit the tiny villages of Fiskardo and Assos during your Kefalonia holidays. Take in the magical scenery, stroll around their little harbors and, of course, sit at a tavern to taste the yummy local delicacies… The traditional Kefalonian meat pie is simply out of this world!
Melissani Lake
You will be left breathless in the mysterious lake cave of Melissani. Hop on one of the little boats and immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of this natural wonder. Just imagine turquoise waters, stalactites and trees washed out by the light that sneaks into the cave from a hole above it… It’s an experience like no other.
One thing is for sure, the memories of our stunning island will stay with you for life!
The amazing Paliki
The Paliki peninsula is located in the western part of the island and is vastly different from the rest of Kefalonia. It features unique morphology of organized flat farmland, a dramatic dry and rocky west coast with numerous beautiful beaches, some with red sand and clay cliffs, rocky coves and unique sunset views. It is indeed a unique place to be.
Lixouri
The town of Lixouri is situated across the gulf of Argostoli – ferries constantly shuttle between the two towns. It’s worth exploring Lixouri’s laid back square and sea front promenade and cafes. It’s a lively town with all the necessary services, a variety of good restaurants and bars, a market, bank, pharmacies, public services and hospital.
Kipouria Monastery
Take a look at the stunning cliff-side location of the Kipouria Monastery. It is overhanging a cliff that crashes into the Ionian, 100 meters above the sea level, in a unique landscape. It has view to the west with a courtyard for guests to attend one of the most spectacular sunsets of Kefalonia. Platia Ammos, one of the best beaches on the island is below here but currently can only be reached by boat.
Landmarks
One more of nature’s paradoxes to discover on Kefalonia is Kounopetra (Moving Rock) – A huge rock was moving in a very slow and continuous movement until August of 1953, when a big earthquake struck the island of Kefalonia.
Don’t miss the romantic sunset and the wild scenery from Gero-Gobos lighthouse.
And then there are the beaches!
If we had to pick two, they would be Petani and Xi!
Petani
Petani is the kind of beach that bewitches the visitor. The dramatic landscape features towering green hills of the most striking turquoise waters along a bright pebbly beach. Simply a dream! One needs to spend a day there. Start the day swimming and sunbathing, then enjoy the finest Greek delicacies and end your day with the most stunning sea sunset you’ve seen in your life!
Xi Beach
Xi Beach is unique and famous for it. The lunar scenery of the red sand next to the clay hills make for an amazing background to your memories! And do not forget, clay is good for the skin! Treat yourself to a little natural spa while you are there!
